How You can Prevent a DUI – Tips on getting the Car Keys

You can prevent a DUI by taking the car keys away from a friend, family member, or someone who appears to be under the influence of alcohol. Follow these key collecting tips provided by the U.S Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

GET THE KEYS: How You Can Intervene

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Advertising Council’s Innocent Victims public service campaign emphasizes the need to intervene and get the keys away from someone about to drive drunk. Here are some helpful tips and advice from focus group research on how people can get the keys away from a drunk driver.
  1. If it is a close friend, try and use a soft, calm approach at first. Suggest to them that they’ve had too much to drink and it would be better if someone else drove or if they took a cab.
  2. Be calm. Joke about it. Make light of it.Vector Car key ring
  3. Try to make it sound like you are doing them a favor.
  4. If it is somebody you don’t know well, speak to their friends and have them make an attempt to persuade them to hand over the keys. Usually they will listen.
  5. If it’s a good friend, spouse, or significant other, tell them that if they insist on driving, you are not going with them. Suggest that you will call someone else for a ride, take a cab, or walk.
  6. Locate their keys while they are preoccupied and take them away. Most likely, they will think they’ve lost them and will be forced to find another mode of transportation.
  7. If possible, avoid embarrassing the person or being confrontational, particularly when dealing with men. This makes them appear vulnerable to alcohol and its effects.

Former Seattle Seahawk Spencer Ware Charged with 2nd DUI this Year.

Former Seattle Seahawk Spencer Ware Charged with 2nd DUI this Year.

Bad news for former Seattle Seahawk running back Spencer Ware… not only was he released by the Seahawks on Saturday but he also got popped with a DUI charge on Tuesday.  Apparently, Ware was arrested for allegedly drunk driving on Tuesday morning in Maple Valley and was booked into the Kent jail at 3:21am.

This is Spencer Ware’s second DUI within this year, his first DUI was on January 9th when he was on the Seahawks injured reserve list.  The 22-year-old was lucky in July, his DUI case was dismissed after a ruling that the arresting officer did not have a lawful basis to initiate the traffic stop.  The judge also suppressed all evidence gathered after the traffic stop, which included incriminating evidence such as the BAC test and DUI field sobriety test results.

Although Ware’s January DUI was dismissed, it will likely be used against him during the resolution of his new DUI charge.  Ware’s next court date is his arraignment set for September 8th in the Maple Valley Municipal Court.

Currently Spencer Ware is a free agent and has yet to be picked up by an NFL team.

On a side note, downtown Seattle is buzzing with fanatical Seahawk fans, regular season opening game day, Seahawks vs. the Green Bay Packers, go Hawks!

When questioned by law enforcement in Washington State about DUI make sure to exercise your rights.

2. Exercise your right to remain silent during the DUI questioning.

3. Do not consent to detention or search of any type of personal belongings, home, or vehicle.

4. Refuse to perform the DUI field sobriety tests!

5. Refuse to take the DUI portable breath test!

6. Do cooperate at the police station and take the DUI breath test or blood test, unless advised not to do so by your DUI attorney.
